Ministry is heavy work. The people who carry it rarely get a place to set it down. Sanctuary Houston exists to give them one. We are a small cohort of Houston-area ministers connected to Churches of Christ, gathered for a season of rest, renewal, and honest company. We are modeled on Sanctuary, the ministerial renewal initiative Pepperdine University has run since 2018 as part of Lilly Endowment's Thriving in Ministry. The premise is plain. Ministers thrive when they are not alone. We give our attention to four things. Spiritual formation, because the work asks more of us than our own resources can supply. Friendship, because a calling is sustained by the people who know you and stay. Emotional maturity, because the room only goes as deep as we are willing to. Self-care, because the body keeps score whether we attend to it or not. The shape of the year is simple: The cohort accepts 12-15 ministers. We meet twice a year, with an overnight stay each time. Lodging and meals are covered. The time between gatherings is held by the friendship we build in the room. We are not trying to fix anyone. We are not running a conference. Sanctuary Houston is a covenant. Once dates are set, every member accepts or declines a place in the room. Those who accept commit to show up and stay. The group only becomes what it can be when the same twelve people return to one another, again and again, across the year.
